Hillshire Brands Foundation Supports the Healthy Community Initiative

In November 2014, The West Humboldt Park Development Council (WHPDC) received a grant award from Hillshire Brands Foundation to support the Healthy Mind, Healthy Body, Healthy You Program as part of the West Humboldt Park Healthy Community Initiative (HCI). The grant award of $50,000 will provide financial support for the WHPDC to sustain Humboldt Park's Free Healthy Cooking and Exercise Program.

River City Community Church's Grand Opening

River City Community Church is finally moving into its long term home! To commemorate this event, River City Community Church will be inviting its communty members to participate in their Grand Opening event this Saturday, Nov. 8 at 10am. 

Chet Jackson of WHPDC receives NHS Neighborhood Leadership Award

Neighborhood Housing Services of Chicago (NHS) held its Annual Meeting and Neighborhood Leadership Awards program, "NHS @ 40: Deep Roots, Still Growing" on Tuesday, October 21, 2014 at the Bridgeport Art Center.

 

The event was attended by over 300 partners, volunteers, community leaders and neighborhood residents.  The evening's program showcased nine Neighborhood Heroes and celebrated NHS' accomplishments.

New Divvy Bike Share Stations Coming to West Humboldt Park

West Humboldt Park residents will soon have another way to get around the neighborhood and take trips to other parts of Chicago. The City of Chicago recently made the announcement that the Divvy Bike Share program would be expanded in spring of 2015, adding 245 new bike share station locations, mostly in new areas. What this means for WHP is that there will be 4 new stations anticipated for the neighborhood, with other new stations popping up nearby as well. Divvy will install the new stations in Spring of 2014.

Summer PlayStreets Events & Block Club Parties in West Humboldt Park

The West Humboldt Park Development Council organized three PlayStreets events in partnership with Gads Hill Center and Block Club Network members for the West Humboldt Park community during the summer of 2014. Also, over the course of the summer, over 40 block club parties took place in WHP.

West Humboldt Park: PlayStreets Events 2014

The West Humboldt Park Development Council (WHPDC) will organize 3 PlayStreets events in the West Humboldt Park Community on the following dates:

  • Saturday, August 2 – 900 Block of North Springfield
  • Saturday, August 30 – 3600 Block of West Ohio
  • Saturday, September 6 – 700 Block of North Sawyer

PlayStreets 2014 is a citywide initiative, which focuses on providing families and youth with open, safe play spaces to come together and engage in physical activities. This initiative will address obesity and diabetes related health disparities. Events are reoccurring and take place in communities that lack safe outdoor play spaces. Community based organizations, stakeholders and community members are encouraged to work together to organize PlayStreets events during the summer season.

Attend the 15th Annual CeaseFire Peace Festival in West Humboldt Park!

Please join Ceasefire and the Kells Park Advisory Council as we celebrate the 15th annual Ceasefire Peace Festival on Friday June 6th at 4PM at Kells Park, 3201 West Chicago Ave. (Chicago Avenue & Kedzie). This is a free event and open to all. There will be Games, Free Food, Live Entertainment, Raffle Prizes, Community Resources and so much more! Please see the attached flyer for more information! April Showers Bring Volunteers and May Flowers at Ujima Community Garden

The West Humboldt Park Ujima Community Garden has a fair share of volunteer support from community partners and residents to help the garden flourish. The word ‘Ujima’ originates from Kwanzaa, meaning collective work and responsibility. Once a vacant lot full of contaminated soil, it has transformed into a beautiful garden, thanks to the many partners and residents who have contributed to its development. Recent activities and events in the Ujima Community Garden demonstrate collective work and responsibility.

Free Kells Park Annual Easter Egg Hunt

Come out and join the fun for the Annual Kells Park Easter Egg Hunt in West Humboldt Park! This free event will take place on April 18 at 2pm in Kells Park, located at 3201 West Chicago Avenue, at the corner of Chicago and Kedzie Avenues.

There will be fun for the entire family! Please bring your own Easter basket to participate in the egg hunt. Games, prizes and healthy snacks will be available for all participants. There will be an egg hunt, egg race, hoola hoop competition, tug of war, relay races, sack races and other fun activities!

Salvation Army Brings The Freedom Center to West Humboldt Park

The Salvation Army is relocating The Freedom Center to a 5-acre site at Chicago and Christiana Avenues in West Humboldt Park. The Freedom Center is being relocated from its home of 36 years at Monroe Street and Ashland Avenue on the near west side of Chicago. The new facility will offer a broad variety of educational, recreational, spiritual and social service programs for the entire community. In fact, the new Freedom Center will house three Salvation Army programs that are critical to serving people in need from throughout Chicagoland: The Harbor Light Center, The Mobile Feeding and Outreach Program and The Pathway Forward Program.

The Salvation Army Freedom Center Groundbreaking Ceremony will be held on Monday, April 28, 2014 at 10 A.M. at 825 North Christiana Avenue. Join us for this special event, featuring testimonials from people whose lives have been transformed by these Salvation Army programs, as well as performances by The Harbor Light Choir and The Harbor Light Hip-Hop Worship Dance Team. Come discover the many ways in which the Freedom Center will positively impact WHP and the surrounding West Side communities. Mayor Emanuel Asks Residents to Suggest Locations for New Divvy Stations

Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Divvy, Chicago’s bike-share system, launched a new website today to solicit suggestions and feedback from Chicagoans on the locations for the 175 new Divvy stations scheduled to be added to the system in 2014.

Summer Fun at West Humboldt Park Playstreets Events

The West Humboldt Park Development Council (WHPDC) organized 4 Summer PlayStreets events in the West Humboldt Park Community on the following dates and locations:

  • August 5 - 3800 Block of West Ohio Street
  • August 17 – 800 Block of North Hamlin Avenue
  • August 31 – 3500 Block of West Ohio Street
  • September 7 – 900 Block of North Springfield

Summer PlayStreets 2013 is a citywide initiative, which focuses on providing families and youth with open, safe play spaces to come together and engage in physical activities to address obesity, diabetes and other health disparities. Events are reoccurring and take place in communities that lack safe outdoor play spaces. Community based organizations, stakeholders and community members are encouraged to work together to organize PlayStreets events during the summer season.

Community partners joined the WHPDC to assist with facilitating games and activities during the events. Families and youth enjoyed old school games such as ‘Red Light, Green Light,’ Tug of War and Four Square.

Outdoor bowling, tumbling demonstrations, basketball, relay races, jump rope and hoola hoop competitions were participants’ favorites. Partners included Tumbling for Success, Zenith Dance Company, Fit to Be A Mom, Inc, Chicago Childrens Museum, Catholic Charities, Junior Urban League of Chicago, Fierce   Fitness and many more. Cameron Elementary School and Kelly Hall YMCA lended sports equipment for the events. This initiative is supported by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois, The Chicago Department of Public Health, LISC Chicago, Active Transportation Alliance and World Sport Chicago.

 

 

 

 

The Chicago Plays! Playground Replacement Program Provides New Playground Equipment in West Humboldt Park

The West Humboldt Park Development Council (WHPDC) and The Kells Park Advisory Committee (KPAC) submitted four applications requesting playground equipment replacements as part of the Chicago Plays Playground Replacement Program. The Chicago Park District in partnership with Friends of the Parks will replace playground equipment at 35 parks in Chicago providing safer and more accessible playgrounds for all Chicago residents.

Mr. Ross was welcomed as Community Development Planner at WHPDC in May 2012. A native of the Englewood Community, he has an outstanding passion for serving the needs of low-income, underserved, marginalized communities.

Healthy Stores Campaign Engages with Chicago Central Park Foods

Three went and grabbed chips, candy, and soda.  A fourth stood in front of the healthy corner kiosk and cooler and came to the check out with a small bag of grapes, an apple and a banana.

Humboldt Park Portal - a Resource for Businesses, Residents, Non-Profits

The Humboldt Park Portal is a business, civic, arts and community website where residents and others can learn about the Humboldt Park neighborhood, plug into local resources and share the Humboldt Park experience. Created by a coalition of local nonprofits, community organizations and nonprofits, the Portal is one of many digital tools we are building to create a stronger community.

Richard M Daley Branch Library Opening July 8

The Richard M. Daley branch library opened on Friday July 8th! This branch library is located at 733 N Kedzie. The library will include a computer center as well as a YouMedia Center.  YOUmedia is an innovative, 21st century teen learning space that is designed to connect young adults, books, media, mentors, and institutions throughout the city of Chicago in one dynamic space designed to inspire collaboration and creativity.
