New West Humboldt Park library branch - Richard M Daley Library
Two exciting opportunities exist for community residents to leave a lasting imprint on the new West Humboldt Park Library at 733 N Kedzie. The first opportunity is the naming of the library rooms and the community garden. The second opportunity is determining the type of artwork that will be displayed.
Stakeholders interested in honoring community heroes on the interior of the library or in the community garden, can take part in an open meeting of the Facilities Committee on Wednesday, January 12, 2011 at Harold Washington Library, 400 N. State Street, at 10:30am. The meeting will take place in the board room located on the 10th floor.
The second opportunity will take place right here in the community. The Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs Public Arts Program will hold a public art forum during the regularly scheduled Block Club Network meeting on Tuesday, January 18, 2011 at 6pm. The meeting will be held at the Nia Family Center, located at 744 N. Monticello. The forum will be an opportunity for community input into the art work that will be displayed at the new library.
The Department of Cultural Affairs Public Arts Program has modified their normal procedures for artist selection to allow the top art candidates to hear community input prior to submitting an art proposal for the site. This modification will insure that our community’s vision will be included in each of the artist’s proposals and will ultimately be reflected in the installed artwork regardless of which artist is selected. The Department will select the winning proposal during the first quarter of 2011 to allow time for the art to be developed before the proposed May ceremony. Residents and students are encouraged to attend these forums. For further information on the forums, contact Janece at the West Humboldt Park Development Council, 773-342-0036.
